The 17th Royal Fusiliers battalion arrived in France in June 1915 as part of 99 Brigade, 33rd Division and in December 1915, they transferred to 5 Brigade, 2nd Division. On 2nd March, 1916 they left their billets at Fosse 10, a mining village east of Bully Grenay and moved into the front line in the Calonne sector where they remained until relieved on 19th March. On 17th March, the day on which Frank Godfrey was killed, the battalion’s positions came under sniper fire and were hit by trench mortars, grenades and artillery. |
